Last week I was in Michigan to photograph a wedding in the Detroit area with Travis and while I was there we met up with his brother Cody and future sister-in-law Erica for their Royal Oak engagement photos. Next spring Travis will be part of their big day, but on the opposite side of the camera as the best man. I on the other hand will be photographing the wedding. I always encourage couples to shoot engagement photos with me so that they can become comfortable in front of the camera and know what to expect when I photograph their wedding so it made sense for me to join Travis to capture some portraits to celebrate their engagement.
Cody is a PGA pro at Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak, Michigan outside of Detroit so after helping Erica nail down a few outfit choices we drove across town to the course to start the session. The course features huge treelined fairways which provided a great backdrop for some images. We chased light around the course in a pair of golf carts and avoided the rain before heading to downtown Royal Oak after a quick outfit change.
I didn’t know what to expect for the second half of the session because I didn’t know the area but thankfully we came across severall colorful scenes that we were able to take advantage of. After I shot a few things that caught my eye I lent a hand to Travis by holding a light and even finding a trashcan for Cody and Erica to stand on to create the perfect composition for one of his photos. Travis posted a few more of our photos on his blog.
We all had a great time during the session and an even better time enjoying a few beers to celebrate after we got done. I’m looking forward to photographing their wedding in 2018.
