September is often the perfect month to get married in Colorado in my opinion so I have been looking forward to Meghan and Kevin’s fall colors Camp Hale wedding for a while. Autumn in the high country is hard to beat and the drive through Red Cliff to Camp Hale on the former 10th Mountain Division site is gorgeous. Meghan’s parents bought a place not far from Camp Hale a couple years ago so they knew what the area had to offer this time of year.
While Meghan was getting ready at Elkhorn Lodge in Beaver Creek, Travis photographed Kevin and the groomsmen getting ready at a rented home in Avon just down the road. Their ceremony took place at the Chapel at Beaver Creek near the base of the ski resort. The ladies regularly hike together so they just decided to make the half a mile walk up the road, in high heels no less. Walking backwards myself with a roller full of camera gear, up a severe gradient while trying to document the whole thing was quite the challenge.
Meghan’s mother helps run the chapel so it was a fitting location for their catholic ceremony. After they walked out together as husband and wife, they spent the next 90 minutes or so with us for some portraits on the way to the reception. We accomplished a lot in that time, shooting everywhere from the creek near the chapel to a vibrant grove of aspen trees on the back side of Camp Hale. It’s easy to see why photographing couples with the fall colors is one of my favorites.
Their Camp Hale reception was rocking all night long thanks to live tunes from Mama Magnolia, Meghan’s friends from college. Everyone was out on the dance floor all night and if it wasn’t for a starry night photo near the edge of the pond that we set up, I’m not sure that Meghan would have ever left the dance floor. She presented the idea of such a photo during our initial meeting and I was happy to execute it them. It was a complete team effort with Travis and I setting things up before we brought Kevin and Meghan in for the 10 second exposure. It’s captivating what the sky looks like away from city light pollution.
It was a pleasure to capture such a colorful, dynamic and fun fall colors wedding at Camp Hale. Congratulations to you both, we couldn’t have had a better time all day with your friends and family.
